Q. I'd like to get married over a three-day holiday weekend so guests have extra time to travel. My fiancé worries that it's impolite to expect people to give up their vacation just for us. What's your opinion?
A. Before you decide to schedule your wedding over a long weekend, weigh the pros and cons. On one hand, planning a three-day event usually turns nuptials into a mini-vacation or family reunion, which may be a welcome option for many guests. It's also less likely that out-of-towners will have to take time off from work to travel to your wedding. Then again, some folks may already have plans for their long weekend. It's not rude to invite them, but be prepared to receive fewer acceptances.
If you go ahead with your holiday celebration, help traveling guests by securing a block of hotel rooms for them to book, since accommodations often sell out far in advance on popular holidays like Labor Day. Also, be sure to send save-the-dates and travel information at least six to eight months ahead of time.
