Q. My friend knows I can't afford to come to his wedding, but he sent me an invitation anyway. Do I still need to buy him a gift?
A. Generally, if you're invited to a wedding, you have an obligation to send a gift whether or not you attend, though the present doesn't have to be expensive or elaborate. Bear in mind that there is probably a good reason your friend has invited you, even if he is aware of your financial circumstances: He may not want you to feel left out, or he may hope you'll be able to find a way to attend after all. But if the groom is someone you haven't spoken to or seen in several years, you may send a card wishing the couple well instead.
