Q. Is it true that welcome baskets have become expected at destination weddings? What should we include in ours?

A. Yes, most people are compiling gifts for their guests to pick up when they check in—or better yet, to find in their hotel room when they arrive. "You don't want your guests to have to pay for items in the minibar," says Mindy Weiss, "so a bag full of treats, along with a copy of the itinerary, is always appreciated." You can also use the welcome baskets to offer guests a taste of the local culture. Says Marianne Weiman-Nelson, "Make the contents indicative of the area. In Venice give guests wineglasses and Chianti; in Mexico, a hat and sunscreen." For a Hawaii wedding, says Debbie Cravatta, give them guava juice, macadamia nuts and Kona coffee in woven baskets.
