When to Register Leah Ingram, author of Plan Your Wedding in No Time, recommends registering soon after getting engaged, "especially if you have an engagement party, shower, birthday or holiday coming up." Etiquette expert Peggy Post adds that your registry should be up and running by the time you send out your save-the-dates.
How Much Is Too Much? A young bride-to-be with few possessions has different needs than a couple who already lives in a well-stocked home. Post says there's no formula to tell you how many gifts to register for; just be sure to list enough. "It's frustrating for guests to find that everything has already been purchased," she says. Register for at least one item for each invited guest or couple, then check your registry often and add more gifts if necessary.
Set a Price Range Only you know what your friends and family would feel comfortable spending, so keep that range in mind as you register. Jean Moses, special projects and bridal director at Waterford, recommends registering for items beginning at $5 or $10 for shower gifts and going up to $1,000 for wedding gifts that guests may want to go in on together.
Make Shopping Easy "National chains and online registries simplify things for your guests," says Post, but remember that not everyone shops on the Internet. People often like to go to the store to see what's on your registry. Also make your list more comprehensive by registering at a variety of shops.
Avoid Faux Pas "Never put your registry information on your invitation," says Nicole Marquis, special markets director at Syratech, a silver manufacturer. And don't forget to send your thank-you notes within three months of receiving a gift, says Post.
