There's no getting around it: Red lips are an attention getter. But they don't have to look vixenish, à la Betty Boop; they can just as easily summon Mad Men's Betty Draper. "Red lipstick is a classic. It's great for the girl who's into vintage," says Dior Beauty makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff, who's worked with Alicia Keys. "Dita von Teese is a great example: barely anything on the face—a soft cheek, strongly lined eyes—with those intense lips." For a suggestion of red without the retro connotations, Susan McCarthy, who applied the makeup on these pages, fills in the lips with red pencil, adds clear balm and blots.
